What is ‘Chronic worrying’?

“My mind is racing all day long!”, “Where’s the off button?” – many people will be familiar with these thoughts. Thinking about our problems often produces an effective solution – as human beings, we have the ability to make plans in order to address problems and overcome possible obstacles which may lie ahead.

But we are also all familiar with those moments when our thoughts are simply going around in circles; we cannot find a solution yet we feel unable to focus our attention on anything else. These thoughts cost a huge amount of time and energy, yet they rarely lead to any kind of satisfactory solution.

Symptoms of chronic worrying

Now and again, you may find that your thoughts are spinning around in your head, or that you cannot get a certain topic off your mind. There is no need to worry if this feeling lasts for a few days.

However, if your worrying lasts more than a couple of days and starts to affect your daily ability to function, it may be a sign that you need some help. The most obvious symptoms of chronic worry disorder are intense fear and anxiety about different things happening in your life and a feeling of lack of control over these events. This may be accompanied with restlessness, a decrease in self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, irritability and muscle tension.
