What is depression?

Everybody feels a bit sad and blue now and again. Sadness, fear, joy and anger are all basic human emotions. Our moods change constantly and are connected to these basic emotions. Feeling sad or depressed is often simply a normal reaction to disappointment or loss.

However, sometimes these feelings of sadness can last for a long time and become more intense. This can result in a reduced enjoyment of things that you used to enjoy doing. Normal daily tasks can start to feel like a struggle. This can lead you to feel that you have become caught in a negative vicious circle.

Symptoms of a depression

Perhaps a personal setback has left you feeling upset for a few days. Or maybe you have been feeling gloomy for a little while. This is perfectly normal; everybody recognizes these feelings.

Your feelings are simply a reaction to circumstances – they will pass. However, if you feel sad every day and it lasts for at least two weeks, you may be depressed. The two main characteristics of depression are persistent sadness and reduced interest or pleasure in (almost) all activities. This is often accompanied with sleeping problems, a reduction in appetite, low self-esteem, chronic worrying and concentration problems.
